What does John 14:6 mean?
The night before the cross
John 14 takes place at the Last Supper. Jesus has just told his friends he is leaving, and they are shaken. He begins by telling them not to let their hearts be troubled, and promises he is going to prepare a place for them (John 14:1-3).
An answer to Thomas
Thomas honestly says they do not know where Jesus is going, so how can they know the way (John 14:5)? Jesus does not hand him a map. He points to himself. The way to God is not a set of directions but a person to follow and trust.
Way, truth and life
Jesus is the way, because through him people come to the Father. He is the truth, because he shows what God is really like (John 14:9). He is the life, because the life of God is found in him. All three are offered to people who were confused and afraid.
What about people who never hear?
Christians agree this verse means salvation comes only through Jesus. They differ on how. Some hold that a person must consciously believe in Jesus in this life. Others hold that Jesus can save some who never heard of him clearly, but still only through him. Both views take the verse seriously and leave final judgment with a God who is just and merciful.
