Bible verses explained

What does Joshua 1:9 mean?

Joshua 1:9 is God telling Joshua to be strong and courageous and not afraid, because God will be with him wherever he goes. Joshua had just lost his mentor Moses and was about to lead a whole nation into an unknown land. The courage comes from God's presence, not from Joshua's own confidence.

A command given to someone scared

God says "be strong and courageous" three times in this chapter (Joshua 1:6, 7, 9). You do not repeat that to someone who already feels brave. Joshua was stepping into a role far bigger than him.

The reason is the second half

The command rests on the promise: "the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Courage here is not pretending to be fearless. It is moving forward because you are not going alone.

Strength tied to God's word

Just before this, God tells Joshua to keep his law close and think on it day and night (Joshua 1:8). Courage and trust in what God has said go together.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go., Joshua 1:9

Common questions

Who is God speaking to in Joshua 1:9?

Joshua, who had just taken over leadership of Israel after Moses died.

Why does God say "be strong and courageous" so many times?

Because Joshua faced a huge task and real fear. The repetition is encouragement, not a scolding.

Can Christians apply Joshua 1:9 today?

The specific mission was Joshua's, but the promise of God's presence fits the whole Bible's message, so Christians take courage from it.
