Bible verses explained

What does Micah 6:8 mean?

Micah 6:8 says that what God wants from his people is not bigger religious offerings but a life of justice, mercy and humble closeness to him. Micah was answering people who thought they could keep God happy with sacrifices while treating others unfairly. It is a summary of a faithful life, not a list of steps to earn God's favor.

A courtroom scene

Micah was a prophet in Judah in the 700s BC, around the same time as Isaiah. In chapter 6, God brings a case against his people and reminds them of everything he did for them, including bringing them out of Egypt (Micah 6:3-5). He had already been good to them.

The wrong question

The people respond by asking what they should bring to God: burnt offerings, thousands of rams, rivers of oil, even their own child (Micah 6:6-7). The offers grow more extreme because they think God is hard to please. Verse 8 cuts through all of it. God has already shown them what is good.

Three things that belong together

To act justly is to treat people fairly, especially those with little power. To love mercy is to delight in kindness and loyal love, not just do it grudgingly. To walk humbly with God is the root of the other two, a daily, unpretentious walk with him.

Not a way to earn God

Micah 6:8 is sometimes read as "just be a good person and that is enough." In context, it describes how people who already belong to God should live in response to what he has done. Justice and mercy flow from walking with him.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God., Micah 6:8
