What does the Bible say about gossip?
Why gossip does so much harm
Gossip spreads stories about people who are not there to speak for themselves. Proverbs says "a gossip separates close friends." Even when the details are true, passing them around can wound people and break trust.
Words that build up
Paul says to let only "what is helpful for building others up" come out of our mouths. A simple test: would I say this if they were in the room, and does it help them?
Gossip versus honest concern
Not every conversation about someone is gossip. Asking for advice, protecting someone from harm, or reporting wrongdoing to the right person can be wise and necessary. The difference is usually the motive and who needs to know.
Grace when you have gossiped
If you have hurt someone with your words, you can stop, own it, and where it is safe and wise, make it right. God's forgiveness covers this too, and changing the habit is possible.
A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends., Proverbs 16:28
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen., Ephesians 4:29Ask your own question →
Is it gossip if it is true?
It can be. Gossip is less about whether something is true and more about whether sharing it helps or harms.
How do I stop a conversation that turns into gossip?
Gently change the subject, or say something kind about the person being discussed. Often that is enough.
What if people are gossiping about me?
That hurts. You can bring the pain to God, talk to someone you trust, and where it is safe, address it directly with the person.
