What does the Bible say about lust?

The Bible does not treat attraction or desire as sin. Lust is something else: looking at someone as something to use or possess. Jesus said lust in the heart counts, not only what we do with our bodies. But the Bible's answer is not shame. It is a new heart, honest confession, and a God who forgives and helps us change.

Attraction is not lust

God made people with bodies and desire, and the Song of Songs celebrates love and attraction openly. Noticing that someone is attractive is not a sin. Lust is when that turns into wanting them as something to have.

Adultery can happen in the mind

In Matthew 5:28 Jesus says "anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." He is raising the bar from the body to the heart. Unfaithfulness does not start when something physical happens. It starts when you keep looking and let yourself want someone.

Married or single changes the question

Jesus says this while talking about adultery, so his warning is mainly about wanting someone who is not your husband or wife. If you are married, desire for your own spouse is not lust at all; the Bible celebrates it (Proverbs 5:18-19, Song of Songs, 1 Corinthians 7:3-5). Desire for someone else is the danger, and Jesus is clear that it counts even if nothing physical ever happens. If you are single, being drawn to someone you might one day marry is not adultery. The question is whether you see them as a whole person to honour or as something to have.

Why the body matters

Paul says "your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit" and "you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." Desire is not the enemy, but it is meant to serve love, not take from people.

Not shame, and not managing it alone

Some people say lust is just part of them and the goal is to harness it. The Bible agrees that shame does not heal anyone. But it offers more than control: God promises to forgive and "purify us from all unrighteousness." Change usually comes through honesty with God and a trusted friend, plus practical steps, more than willpower alone.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart., Matthew 5:27-28
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies., 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness., 1 John 1:9

Common questions

Is it a sin to be attracted to someone?

No. Attraction is part of being human. Lust is wanting someone as something to use or have.

I'm married and attracted to someone else. Have I already sinned?

A passing notice is not the sin. Jesus says adultery begins in the heart, so the sin starts when you keep looking and let yourself want them: replaying it, picturing it, letting it grow. That is real unfaithfulness even if you never act on it. Turn your attention back to your spouse, be honest with God, and if it keeps pulling at you, tell a trusted friend or counsellor before it goes further.

What if I keep failing?

You are not alone, and you are not too far gone. Confess it, receive forgiveness, tell someone you trust, and get practical help. If it has become compulsive, a counsellor can help.

Is masturbation lust?

The Bible never mentions it directly, and Christians disagree. Most agree that the thoughts and habits around it are what matter.
