Grace

What does the Bible say about pride?

The Bible treats pride as one of the most dangerous attitudes a person can have, because it puts self at the centre and shuts out God and others. "Pride goes before destruction." The answer it offers is not self hatred but humility: seeing yourself honestly, as someone loved and dependent on grace.

What the Bible means by pride

Biblical pride is not being glad about good work or caring for yourself. It is the attitude that says "I do not need God, and I am above other people." It shows up as arrogance, but also as refusing help or being unable to admit fault.

Why it is so dangerous

Pride blinds. It makes it hard to see your own mistakes, hard to listen, and hard to receive anything as a gift. Proverbs puts it bluntly: pride comes before a fall.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself

Humility in Scripture is honesty. You are not the centre of the universe, and you are also deeply valued. Both are true. A humble person can receive love and give it freely because they are not busy defending themselves.

More grace for the proud too

James says "he gives us more grace." God's opposition to pride is not a door slammed shut. The moment you lower your guard and admit you need him, grace is already there.

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall., Proverbs 16:18
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”, James 4:6

Common questions

Is it wrong to feel proud of my kids or my work?

No. Being glad about something good is different from the self exalting pride Scripture warns about. Gratitude and joy are not arrogance.

How do I know if I struggle with pride?

Notice how you handle correction, other people's success, and admitting you were wrong. Those are often where pride hides.

Is low self worth the opposite of pride?

Not really. Both keep the focus on yourself. Humility rests in being loved by God, which frees you from needing to be either above or below others.
