What is the gospel?

The gospel means "good news," and it is this: that God loves you, that Jesus lived, died, and rose to deal with everything broken between you and God, and that this rescue is a gift you receive rather than a reward you earn. In short — you are more flawed than you feared, and more loved than you hoped.

It is news, not advice

Most religion is advice — do these things and get to God. The gospel is news — that God already came to you. It is not a to-do list; it is an announcement of something already done.

The core of it in one line

Jesus took what we owed and offered us what we could never earn. His death paid the debt; his resurrection opened the door. All that is left is to receive it.

Why it is called "good"

Because it does not depend on you being good enough — which is a relief, since no one is. It meets you at your worst and calls you loved anyway.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.— John 3:16
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.— Romans 5:8

Common questions

What does "gospel" actually mean?

It is an old word for "good news" — specifically the news that God has rescued people through Jesus.

Is the gospel about being a good person?

No. It is the opposite — that you cannot be good enough on your own, so God did for you what you could not do for yourself.

How do I respond to it?

By receiving it — trusting Jesus and turning to him. It is a gift to accept, not a standard to meet.
