Faith & Doubt

Why does God feel so far away?

Feeling distant from God is one of the most common experiences of faith — and feeling far is not the same as being far. Even great believers went through it; some of the Psalms are written from exactly that place. The distance is usually in the feeling, not the reality, and it rarely lasts.

You are in good company

The Psalms cry out "why do you hide your face?" — and they are Scripture. Feeling God's absence is not a sign you have failed at faith; it is part of many honest faith journeys.

Feelings are not the measure

God's nearness is described as a fact, not a mood — "I will never leave you." Emotions rise and fall; the promise does not. You can be held even when you do not feel it.

What can help

Keep showing up honestly — even prayers of "I don't feel you, but I'm still here" count. Community, Scripture, and time often bring the felt sense back. Dry seasons usually pass.

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?— Psalm 13:1
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.— Deuteronomy 31:8

Common questions

Does God actually leave people?

The Bible promises the opposite — that God never leaves. Feeling distant is common, but it is described as a feeling, not the reality.

Did I do something to push God away?

Not necessarily. Spiritual dryness happens to almost everyone, often for no clear reason. It is not proof of failure.

How do I feel close to God again?

Keep showing up honestly in prayer, community, and Scripture. The felt closeness usually returns with time; the promise holds in the meantime.
