1 Chronicles 22 explained: David Prepares for a Temple

Near the end of his life, David picks the site for the temple, gathers materials and workers, and hands the building project to his young son Solomon.

The site is chosen (v. 1)

In the previous chapter, after a deadly plague stopped, David bought a threshing floor in Jerusalem (a flat place for beating grain from stalks) and offered sacrifices there. Now he declares that this spot will be the site of God's house and Israel's main altar.

Workers and materials gathered (vv. 2-5)

The stonecutters were foreigners living in Israel, probably descendants of the land's earlier peoples and war captives, likely put to forced labor. The cedar came from the forests of Lebanon, shipped by traders from the port cities of Tyre and Sidon, and David stockpiled everything because Solomon was young and the temple was meant to impress the nations.

Why David cannot build it (vv. 6-10)

David says God barred him because he had shed so much blood in war, while Solomon, whose name sounds like the Hebrew word for peace, would reign in a time of rest. God's promise to be a father to Solomon and to make his throne last forever repeats an earlier promise to David, and Christians later read it as pointing to Jesus.

David's charge to Solomon (vv. 11-16)

David ties Solomon's success to keeping the laws given through Moses, and his call to be brave and not lose heart echoes what was once said to Joshua. The gold and silver figures in verse 14 would come to thousands of tons, so many scholars think they are round numbers meaning "beyond counting" or the result of a copying error, though no one is sure.

Leaders told to help (vv. 17-19)

David reminds Israel's leaders that his wars have brought peace and urges them to back Solomon wholeheartedly. The goal was a permanent home for the ark, the sacred chest that stood for God's covenant (binding agreement) with Israel, which until then had been kept in a tent.
