Exodus 39 explained: Priestly Clothes and a Finished Tent

The craftsmen make the priests' clothing exactly as instructed, then bring the finished tent of worship and all its furnishings to Moses, who checks everything and blesses them.

Ephod and shoulder stones (vv. 1-7)

The ephod was the high priest's richly woven outer garment, probably a kind of apron or vest, though its exact shape is uncertain; gold was hammered thin and cut into thread to work into the cloth. Two onyx stones engraved with the names of Israel's tribes sat on its shoulders, so the priest symbolically carried the whole people with him as he served.

Breastpiece of twelve stones (vv. 8-21)

A square, doubled panel about a hand's span wide was worn on the chest, set with twelve gems, each engraved with one tribe's name. No one is sure which modern stones the ancient names refer to, which is why translations list them differently; the gold chains and blue cords held it firmly against the ephod.

The blue robe (vv. 22-26)

Under the ephod went a robe of solid blue with a reinforced neck opening so it would not tear. Its hem alternated cloth pomegranates, a common symbol of life and fruitfulness, with gold bells, which an earlier chapter says were to be heard as the high priest went in and out of the holy place.

Linen clothes and gold plate (vv. 27-31)

Aaron and his sons received tunics, headwear and undergarments of fine linen, with a sash embroidered in blue, purple and scarlet. The high priest's turban carried a gold plate engraved like a seal with words declaring him holy to the LORD, marking him as set apart for God's service.

Everything brought to Moses (vv. 32-43)

The workers presented every finished piece, from tent frames and leather coverings to the ark and altars, and Moses found it all made exactly as the LORD had instructed, so he blessed them. The repeated phrase "as the LORD commanded Moses" stresses this faithfulness, and many scholars hear an echo of the creation story, where God looks over finished work and blesses it.

Where Christians differ

Christians differ on how far to read these garments and furnishings as symbols pointing ahead to Jesus, with some finding meaning in nearly every detail and others reading the chapter mainly as a record of a community's careful obedience.
