James 3 explained: Careless Words and True Wisdom
A warning to teachers (vv. 1-2)
In the early churches teachers were respected people who explained the faith, and James warns that those who shape others with words will be held to a higher standard. He includes himself and admits that everyone slips up, and speech is where we slip most easily.
Small things steer big ones (vv. 3-5)
A small bit turns a horse and a small rudder turns a ship, so the small tongue can steer a whole life. Like one spark setting a forest alight, a few words can start damage far bigger than themselves.
Words as fire and poison (vv. 6-8)
James says harmful speech spreads like fire through a whole life and is fed by hell itself (literally Gehenna, a valley outside Jerusalem that became a picture of final judgment). People have tamed every kind of animal, yet no one fully masters their own tongue.
Blessing and cursing together (vv. 9-12)
It makes no sense to praise God and then curse people, because every person is made in God's likeness. A spring cannot pour out both fresh and salt water, nor a fig tree grow olives, so speech that contradicts itself shows something is wrong at the source.
Wisdom that is not wise (vv. 13-16)
Real wisdom shows up in a humble, good life, not in clever talk. A so-called wisdom driven by envy and the urge to get ahead does not come from God but from this world, from base human instincts and even from the devil, and it breeds disorder and every kind of wrong.
Wisdom from above (vv. 17-18)
The wisdom that comes from God is pure in motive, peaceful, gentle, willing to listen, merciful, fair and without pretence. People who make peace are like farmers sowing seed that grows into a harvest of right living.

Something to think about
When has something small that you said, or that someone said to you, ended up mattering far more than the words themselves seemed to weigh?
