Proverbs 14 explained: Choices That Build or Wreck

A collection of short sayings comparing how wise and foolish choices shape a home, speech, friendships, money and even a whole nation.

Building up or tearing down (vv. 1-7)

Wisdom builds a household, while foolishness wrecks it from the inside. An empty barn stays tidy, but without an ox there is no harvest, so real gain comes with some mess and effort.

What others cannot see (vv. 8-14)

Every person carries griefs and joys no one else can fully share, and laughter can hide real pain. A path can feel right and still end in ruin, so the wise think about where their road is going.

Naive, rash, and careful (vv. 15-19)

The 'simple' here are naive people who believe whatever they hear, while the careful check each step. The hothead acts on impulse and still feels sure of himself, and the one who plots harm ends up hated.

Rich, poor, and neighbors (vv. 20-24)

Verse 20 simply observes that people flock to the rich and avoid the poor, and verse 21 then calls looking down on a neighbor wrong. Steady work brings results, while big talk leads only to want.

Truth, respect, and inner calm (vv. 25-30)

Honest testimony in court can save a life, and the 'fear of the LORD,' meaning deep respect for God that shapes how you live, is pictured as a fortress and a fountain. A calm heart is good for the body, while envy is said to rot the bones.

The poor, nations, and kings (vv. 31-35)

Mistreating the poor is called an insult to God, because God made them too, and justice is what truly lifts a nation. Verse 32 says the righteous find refuge even in death, and scholars are unsure whether this points to hope beyond death, since some ancient copies read differently.
