Psalm 1 explained: Two Paths: Rooted Tree or Chaff

This opening psalm contrasts two ways of living, one rooted in the LORD's teaching and one that ends up blowing away to nothing.

Choosing who shapes you (v. 1)

Walking, then standing, then sitting pictures someone gradually settling in among people who ignore God and mock what is good, and many readers see a slow slide deeper in. The truly happy person is the one who does not take that path.

Delight in God's teaching (v. 2)

The word translated "law" means instruction, probably the scriptures written by then, especially the first five books of the Bible. This person enjoys it and keeps turning it over in their mind day and night.

A tree by water (v. 3)

In a dry land, a tree planted beside irrigation channels stays green through drought and bears fruit at the right time. It pictures a life with a steady, deep source of strength that comes good in its season.

Chaff in the wind (vv. 4-5)

At harvest, farmers tossed threshed grain into the air so the wind carried off chaff, the light husks, and the wicked are pictured as just as weightless. They will not hold up when judged or belong among the faithful, though it is debated whether this means a final judgment or God's verdicts in this life.

Where each road leads (v. 6)

The LORD knowing the way of the righteous means he pays close attention to them, caring for and guiding them. The other road simply comes to nothing.

Key verse: Psalm 1:6

Where Christians differ

Christians differ on whether the promise that this person will prosper means visible success in this life or a deeper flourishing that may not show outwardly.

When you look at the people and ideas that shape you most, do they leave you feeling more rooted or more blown about?
