Psalm 117 explained: Every Nation Called to Praise
In the Bible's shortest chapter, all the world's peoples are invited to praise God because his love and faithfulness never run out.
A call to everyone (v. 1)
The psalm invites every nation and people, not only Israel, to praise Israel's God. Christians read this in light of Jesus, since the apostle Paul quotes it to show that people of every nation are welcome to God.
The reason for praise (v. 2)
The Hebrew word for love here means loyal, steadfast love that is strong and overflowing, and "us" most likely means Israel, so other nations are invited to celebrate how faithfully God has treated his people. The psalm ends with the Hebrew word "hallelujah," which means a call to praise the LORD.
Key verse: Psalm 117:1
