What is something that makes you feel safe?
Read together
Romans 8:1-17, then Romans 8:18-39. If you are leading, read the plain-words note on Romans 8 first (linked below).
Discussion questions
Verse 1: "There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Where do you still feel condemned, even though this is true?
In verse 15 Paul says we can call God "Abba, Father." What words would you use to describe how you relate to God right now?
Verse 18 says "our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us." How can hope for the future help with pain right now?
Verse 26 says when we don't know what to pray, "the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." Have you ever had a season when you couldn't find the words to pray?
Verse 28 says "in all things God works for the good of those who love him." How is that different from saying everything that happens is good?
Verses 38 and 39 list things that cannot separate us from God's love. If you added something from your own life to that list, what would it be?
For our lives this week
Write verses 38 and 39 somewhere you will see them every day this week. When fear or shame shows up, read them out loud.
Close in prayer
Thank God that nothing can separate you from his love. Pray for anyone in the group who is suffering right now.
Leader tip
Verse 28 is often quoted to people in pain in a way that hurts. Help the group see it as a promise about God's purpose, not a reason to call suffering good.
