What should we look for in an online Bible study platform?
The feature list is the least useful comparison
Every product in this category has reading plans, notes, highlights and a search. Those are table stakes and they look identical on a website. What separates them is editorial: which translations, whose commentary, what happens at the edges where Christians disagree, and whether the tool will admit uncertainty. None of that appears on a pricing page.
Test it with the question your members actually have
Before deciding, put a genuinely hard question into whatever you are evaluating. Did Judas go to heaven. Why does Genesis 1 not match Genesis 2. Why did God command what he commanded in Joshua. A tool that hands back confident certainty where the church has argued for centuries will eventually embarrass you in front of a member who knows better. One that says "Christians differ here, and this is why" is safe to put in front of a congregation.
Ask where the answers come from
If a platform uses AI — most new ones do — ask what it is grounded in, whether it cites what it draws on, and what it does when it does not know. AI that fabricates a plausible-sounding commentary attribution is worse than no AI, because it is wrong in a register that sounds authoritative. Ask also whether a member's conversations are private from church staff, and be clear with your congregation either way.
Consider who it is for
Tools built for seminary-trained users assume vocabulary most congregations do not have. Tools built for daily devotion often cannot go deep enough for someone in real difficulty. Be honest about which of your people you are buying for — and whether the sceptic, the new believer and the forty-year member can all use the same thing.

Is it safe to let AI answer Bible questions?
It depends entirely on how it behaves at the limits. The risks are confident invention and flattening genuine disagreement into one answer. Test it with a contested question before putting it in front of your congregation, and prefer tools that cite and that will say they do not know.
Will this replace our in-person study?
It should not, and the good ones do not try. What a tool adds is the six days between meetings — the question someone has on Wednesday that will be forgotten by the next gathering.
What about members who ask things they would not say in group?
That is the strongest argument for having one. A great deal of honest doubt never gets voiced in a room, and a private place to ask often surfaces what pastoral conversation never reaches.
How much should this cost?
The range runs from free to per-seat subscriptions. Judge it on whether members will actually use it — an unused paid platform is the most common outcome in this category, and it is not primarily a pricing failure.
