Should my church use AI?

For research and preparation, it is a reasonable tool and a fast one. For anything that speaks to your congregation in your name, the risk is not that it writes badly — it is that it writes confidently about things it has got wrong, and nobody checks.

The real failure mode is confident invention

A language model will produce a quotation from a commentator who never wrote it, in the right register, with the right cadence. It does not sound uncertain when it is wrong. That is manageable for your own study, where you check sources anyway, and much less manageable when the output goes straight to a congregation.

Preparation is a different question from proclamation

Using AI to find every place a word appears, or to summarise four views on a passage before you pick one, is closer to a concordance than to ghostwriting. Using it to produce the sermon is a different act, and worth being honest with yourself about which one you are doing.

Your people will ask it anyway

Whether or not a church adopts AI, its members are already typing their hardest questions into one at eleven at night. The practical question is not whether AI enters the conversation, but whether anything in it points back toward a real person in a real church.

Is it dishonest to use AI in sermon prep?

Not inherently, any more than using a commentary is. It becomes a problem when it replaces the study rather than speeding it up, or when it is hidden.

How do I stop it inventing citations?

Check every quotation against the source before it leaves your desk. Tools that quote retrieved text rather than recalling it from memory are meaningfully safer.

Should I tell my congregation we use it?

For administration, nobody expects disclosure. For anything presented as your own words, most people would want to know, and finding out later costs more than saying so.
