What does John 3:16 mean?
Where it comes from
Jesus is talking at night with Nicodemus, a respected religious teacher who has come with honest questions (John 3:1-21). Jesus has just told him he must be "born again", and verse 16 explains why that new start is possible: it begins with God's love, not with anything Nicodemus does.
"The world" means everyone
In John's Gospel "the world" usually means humanity turned away from God. The surprise is that God loves exactly that world, not just good people or one nation. Nobody is outside the reach of this verse.
"Believes" means trust, not just agreement
To believe in Jesus here is to rely on him, the way you trust a bridge by walking onto it. And "eternal life" in John is not only life after death; it is a new quality of life with God that starts now (John 17:3).
Read the next verse too
John 3:17 adds that God did not send his Son to condemn the world but to save it. The heart of the passage is rescue, not threat.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life., John 3:16Ask your own question →
Who is speaking in John 3:16?
Most readers take it as Jesus speaking to Nicodemus, though some scholars think the Gospel writer begins commenting around verse 16. The meaning is the same either way.
What does "perish" mean in John 3:16?
To be lost, cut off from the life God gives. The verse sets it against eternal life, so it is about two directions a life can go.
Why is John 3:16 so famous?
Because it says the whole Christian message in one sentence: God's love, the gift of Jesus, trust as the response, and life as the result.
