What does the Bible say about anger?

The Bible does not call anger itself a sin, but it warns that anger handled badly quickly turns into harm. "In your anger do not sin" assumes you will feel angry sometimes. The invitation is to be slow to anger, deal with it honestly, and not let it settle in and take over.

Feeling angry is not the problem

God is described as angry at injustice, and Jesus was angry when people were being exploited in the temple. Anger can be a sign that you care about something that matters. Scripture does not ask you to pretend you are fine.

What you do with it matters

The warning is about what anger can grow into: harsh words, revenge, a grudge that lasts for years. "Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry" is practical wisdom. Deal with it before it hardens.

Slow is the goal, not never

James says to be "quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." Slow means there is room to pause, breathe, and ask what is really going on underneath, often hurt, fear, or exhaustion.

Grace when you get it wrong

Everyone has said things in anger they regret. The gospel is not only a warning; it is a way back. You can own what you did, apologise, and receive forgiveness, from God and often from the people you hurt.

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold., Ephesians 4:26-27
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires., James 1:19-20

Common questions

Is it a sin to be angry?

Not in itself. Scripture says "in your anger do not sin", which separates the feeling from what you do with it.

Did Jesus get angry?

Yes. He was angry at hard hearts and at people being cheated in the temple. His anger was aimed at wrongs, not at protecting his pride.

What if my anger feels out of control?

That is worth taking seriously and getting help with, from a counsellor, a doctor, or a trusted pastor. Asking for help is a strong step, not a failure. If you or anyone else is in danger, contact local emergency services.
