Romans 14 Bible study guide: Getting Along When Convictions Differ
Open with
What is something Christians argue about that you think doesn't matter much?
Read together
Romans 14:1-12, then Romans 14:13-23. If you are leading, read the plain-words note on Romans 14 first (linked below).
Discussion questions
Paul says to accept those "whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters" (v. 1). What are some disputable matters among Christians today?
Verse 4 asks, "Who are you to judge someone else's servant?" Why is judging other believers so tempting?
Verse 8 says "whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord." How does belonging to God change how we treat people who disagree with us?
Verse 13 says not to put a "stumbling block" in someone's way. Have you ever used your freedom in a way that hurt someone else's faith?
Verse 17 says God's kingdom is "righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." Which of those is missing most in Christian arguments online?
Verse 19: "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification." What would that look like in this group?
For our lives this week
Think of a Christian you disagree with on something secondary. Pray for them this week, and if it fits, encourage them.
Close in prayer
Thank God that we all belong to him. Ask him to help you hold your convictions with humility and love people who see things differently.
Leader tip
People will disagree about what counts as "disputable." That's fine. Keep the focus on the attitude Paul asks for, not on settling every issue.
