Romans 12 Bible study guide: A Whole Life Given Over

Paul turns from explaining God's mercy to describing the kind of life that grows out of it, in how people think, treat each other, and respond to enemies.

What does a normal Tuesday look like for you?

Read together

Romans 12:1-8, then Romans 12:9-21. If you are leading, read the plain-words note on Romans 12 first (linked below).

Discussion questions

  1. Verse 1 asks you "to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice." What does it mean to give God your whole ordinary life, not just Sunday?

  2. Verse 2: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." What patterns do you see in our culture that pull against following Jesus?

  3. Paul says each person has different gifts (vv. 6 to 8). What gifts do you see in each other? Take a moment to name them.

  4. Verse 10 says to "honor one another above yourselves." What would that look like in this group?

  5. Verse 15: "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn." Which is harder for you, and why?

  6. Verses 17 to 21 say not to take revenge but to "overcome evil with good." Is there someone you need to stop getting even with?

For our lives this week

Pick one verse from verses 9 to 21 and practise it on purpose this week. Tell the group next time how it went.

Close in prayer

Offer God your whole life again, including your week ahead. Ask him to renew your mind and to help you love people who are hard to love.

Leader tip

Naming each other's gifts can be a powerful moment. Give it real time, and make sure everyone hears something.
